Joey Yap on high-rise feng shui

APARTMENT living has gained popularity among Malaysians in recent years, not just as a long-term investment but also as an affordable mode of living, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Baru.

But choosing the right property could turn into a nightmare without the know-how to evaluate a potential property purchase.

This problem becomes more apparent for high-rise buildings compared with landed properties, because the former are more complex and require a different method of assessment.

Here are some rules of thumb to gauge the feng shui of a high-rise property.

  • Is it facing the right way?
  • Mapping the Qi
  • External and internal factors
  • Numbers, shapes and other taboos

Outlook 2013: Stopping the three killers

One of the peculiarities of Chinese feng shui practice is the use of creative names to describe things. In ancient China, scribes were expected to write in the form of elegant poems with an economy of words. Some terms use clever double ententes to present hidden meanings.

Feng shui practitioners also tend to use unusual language to describe their work. They were probably deliberately cryptic to protect their trade secrets. And it is also likely that they wanted to avoid having to answer too many questions from their clients.

For example, if the planet Jupiter’s location in a particular year was considered harmful for certain sectors of a house, the practitioner may go into “science mode” and describe Jupiter, its orbital motion, the impact of its magnetosphere on Earth and the sun, which in turn affects Earth – provided they had a modern perspective of science.

Assessing feng shui-friendly property

How do you know if and when you have found the right house in terms of feng shui? This is the burning question for many property buyers.

And it’s not like you can simply dial a consultant for every house you fancy. So, it’s handy for you to know the basic feng shui rules to acquaint yourself. For example:

  • No water as in lakes, rivers, etc. in the North-east sector. Water in the South-west sector is best, or maybe South-east, East or North.
  • A mountain in the North-east, North-west, West or South is ideal.
  • Avoid negative features like pointed roof corners, pylons and dead trees.
  • Bright Hall – this is one factor that never fails but facing a wide, busy road is not a Bright Hall feature as overly strong Yang energy disperses Qi!

Positive feng shui properties do not just wait around for buyers. To find out “when” is a good time to purchase a property, look at your personal BaZi (Chinese astrology) chart.

Feng shui quick fixes

How is instant gratification affecting our mindset? Undeniably, we are living in an era where a three-second video buffering delay is looked upon as “forever” for most of us. This new level of expectation pushes the boundary of efficiency and decisiveness. At the same time, it also poses a new set of challenges. That is, the mentality that everything needs to be done right here, and right now.

In feng shui, however, nothing is ever instantaneous. The common misconception is that you put an aquarium in the south-east sector of your house, and boom, you’re a director of a public listed company overnight. Well, if only it was that easy, we would have Bill Gates springing up everywhere like mushrooms after the rains. The thing is, people often look for instant results in feng shui. But they failed to realise that like every form of art and science, feng shui is not like a Band-Aid or Botox. At the very least, feng shui requires either a directional or location change, and improving a situation would take time gradually and the progressive change of Qi in the property.

Power of the north-east

To enjoy the benefits of Vasthu Sastra recommendations effectively, an individual should understand the flow of earth energies because they have subtle interactive influences on a human being.

According to the principles of Vasthu Sastra (also known as Indian feng shui) the earth’s electromagnetic forces experience constant changes and these fluctuations have an impact on the human mind and body.

The earth, which is about 13,000km in diameter, is like a huge ball of magnet. It has lines of energy running from north to south, and from east to west, along the path of the sun...

Dispelling myths about the lower ground unit

In feng shui, there’s nothing as absolute negative or total positive. You’re not entirely doomed for the whole year if you happen to have certain negative features in your home. It can’t transform your life overnight, and it certainly cannot put a bad spell on you just because you’re staying in a not-so-positive sector or level of a residence.Take for instance, the lower ground unit...
